Traffic stop leads to 2 deputies firing shots, one suspect dead

DENVER (KDVR) — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a suspect death after a Thursday night traffic stop in Wheat Ridge led to two deputies firing their weapons and one person dead.

On Thursday night, a deputy went to assist a vehicle that was stopped on the left lane of northbound Kipling Street, just south of Interstate 70, according to the sheriff’s press release.

The deputy called for backup after they realized the license plate on the vehicle had expired.

When two more deputies arrived, there was a male driver and a female passenger who had exited the vehicle and were walking around. Both ignored commands to get back in the vehicle according to the press release.

The deputies attempted de-escalation, according to the press release, but the male suspect fired upon them. Two deputies returned fire and hit the suspect multiple times.

Both deputies and responding medical personnel provided first aid before the suspect was transferred to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the sheriff’s office.
