‘Our church was firebombed’: Aurora church seeks answers weeks after fire

AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — A fire at Aurora First Presbyterian Church destroyed several offices and caused smoke damage throughout the church.

The church houses several ministries under one roof, including First Presbyterian and Living Water Christian Center.

“Our church was firebombed on the day before Good Friday,” said Pastor Thomas Mayes with Living Water Christian Center, whose office experienced the worst damage.

Aurora Fire Rescue responded to the fire around 9:50 a.m. on March 28. Fire crews were able to prevent the fire from spreading further.

“They confirmed it was arson the day of the fire,” Mayes said. “They brought the arson dog in just hours after the fire, and he picked up on the accelerant immediately.”

Mayes said the damage to his office will take at least six months to repair, but it will not stop them from having service.

“My emotions is off the chart. I took it personal because it’s my offices,” he said. “I’ve been in this building 20 years. I’ve got a lot of memories in there. I have a lot of things that cannot be replaced.”
