RTD using live cameras on buses and trains as it focuses on safety

DENVER (KDVR) — A major advance in RTD’s efforts to increase safety for its 3.8 million public transit riders includes live cameras that monitor what happens on buses and trains so transit police can take quick action if something goes wrong.

Riders have voiced their concerns about crime on RTD trains and buses. The district has responded with a comprehensive plan to clean up Union Station and assess security risks throughout the system.

The live look-in camera system will provide bus and train operators with the ability to call for immediate backup if problems arise whether dealing with a flat tire or serious crime or accident.

“They have an emergency duress button on their vehicle to be able to press and report any issues,” said Israel Laufer, RTD’s security systems manager.

The new system, part of the Welcoming Transit Environment Strategic Initiative, was made possible by a $2.4 million grant in 2020 from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
