Denver inmate found unresponsive, pronounced dead at Downtown Detention Center

A male inmate has died while in custody of the Denver Sheriff’s Office, according to a press release.

According to the sheriff’s office, the inmate was found unresponsive in a housing unit at the Downtown Detention Center (DDC) Thursday afternoon, according to a statement from the Denver Sheriff Department. The incident occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m.

A medical emergency team was immediately dispatched to the scene and began administering life-saving measures. Despite this, the man was pronounced dead shortly after being discovered, police said.

Per standard protocol in cases involving a death in custody, the Denver Police Department has initiated an investigation into the incident.

The Sheriff’s Department noted that due to the ongoing investigation, limited details can be provided at this time.

The identity of the deceased, the cause of death, and notification to the family will be handled by the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner.
