DENVER (KDVR) — One of the state’s oldest Veterans of Foreign Wars posts has been forced to close its doors.
VFW Colorado confirmed Monday that Post 501, located on West Colfax Avenue and around since Dec. 16, 1920, had its charter revoked on Dec. 17.

“501 is gone forever,” said Steve Kjonaas, V.F.W. Colorado Legislative Director and past state commander.
Kjonaas cited money mismanagement as a key issue. Veterans and supporters who frequented the post said they should have never allowed the post to close, and are protesting its future, or lack thereof. They hope the state governance
The post’s acting commander acknowledges past money problems but said new management has righted the ship, adding that an infusion of bond money will help get the situation back on track.
“Several attempts to fix what we would characterize as mismanagement of money, that there is lots of money unaccounted for,” said Kjonaas.
