Opinion: Told you so: Denver mayor says just six homeless veterans are unsheltered in the city

I broke the story more than a month ago: Denver essentially has ended veteran homelessness.

“The city and our partners are working diligently toward our goal of reaching Functional Zero for unsheltered veteran homelessness by the end of this year,” said Katherine Wamsley, HOST spokesperson, in an email she sent to me Nov. 12. “Our teams are working with roughly a dozen veterans experiencing unsheltered homelessness and we are optimistic we will find permanent housing solutions for them in the very near future.”

Mayor makes official announcement

Mayor Mike Johnston hosted a press conference last week to declare that every veteran in Denver who wants shelter now has it. He made the announcement at VFW Post No. 1, the first VFW post in the world, he said. He called it the birthplace of support for veterans and an apt location for announcing the milestone. He became choked up while talking about the accomplishment. He said six veterans in the city do not want to come indoors.
