Opinion: Evicted homeless hotel residents spend holidays back on streets of Denver

I often write about the nonsense that transpires at Fusion Studios, the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless property where I live. There is a lot of noise and violence here and I often feel as though management tolerates too much. But people do sometimes get thrown out of here, and often they stay in the neighborhood when they return to the streets.

There are a few former Fusion residents who now live outside. It breaks my heart when I see them. They can often be found in the Fusion parking lot, across the street on the Renaissance Hotel property or in Martin Luther King Jr. Park.

One resident, a young woman, hollers and growls all day and night as she wanders the streets. I remember when she was housed at Fusion and medicated. She spoke softly most of the time. But she always claimed someone was trying to kill her.

I remember one night she locked herself out of her apartment. She banged on that door for hours trying to get it open. Finally, a guard let her in.

This young woman is very pretty. Seeing her suffering on the streets drains me. I’m not exactly sure how I could help. One resident said he saw her sleeping in the stairwell of Fusion a couple of nights ago. He said he slowly approached her and offered her some blankets, which she accepted.
