A couple who had lived in their RV on the streets of Denver for many years became the victims of a hit and run last month, but a local homeless advocacy group claims police refused to investigate.
According to a statement e-mailed to the author of this article from Housekeys Action Network Denver, or HAND, “Unlike normal hit and runs where police investigate the incident and get insurance info from the perpetrator to pay for damage, in this case police have refused to investigate and get insurance to pay for repairs — specifically because this couple is houseless living in the RV. Anti-houseless statements by these police have made this prejudice clear – and left this couple with a severely damaged trailer and RV.”
Video shows damage to RV
HAND provided a video that shows the damage to the RV and the occupants’ interactions with police. The video was taken in the parking lot of an industrial complex in the parking lot of Whisler Bearings, 5775 E. 45th Ave. Police and a fire truck are on scene in the video. Still, Denver Police on Monday withheld comment on HAND’s allegations, saying they needed more details about the location of the crash. This article will be updated if police issue a statement. In the video, the owner of the RV shows both his license plate and insurance information to police.
