‘It was surreal’: Colorado man in French Quarter hours before deadly New Orleans attack

DENVER (KDVR) — A Denver man who went to New Orleans to attend the Allstate Sugar Bowl with his girlfriend said he was in the French Quarter just hours before the deadly suspected terror attack.

For Eric Ekwueme and his girlfriend, their trip to New Orleans was supposed to be an exciting vacation, including seeing his team, the Georgia Bulldogs from his alma mater compete against Notre Dame.

Sugar Bowl postponed to Thursday night

“The perfect mix of wanting to get to a new city on top of wanting to go to the game,” Ekwueme said.

They spent most of the day on Tuesday going to jazz restaurants and restaurants in the French Quarter.

“She had made plans for our New Year’s to be away from there, but if that had fallen through, our backup plan was just to go back to the area because we knew people would be around. We knew things would be happening,” Ekwueme said.

Looking back, he said he is thankful the plans did not fall through after waking up the next morning to a barrage of texts and missed calls. Then, when he did some digging, he learned what had happened.
