As temperatures rise and fall in a short span of time, moisture that melts into cracks found on rocks can refreeze and expand, playing a role in knocking rocks loose.
According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, Highway 119 was closed on Saturday night after debris from a rockfall landed on the road, resulting in significant damage.
