Local residents probably haven’t noticed, but Denver is sinking – in other words, the Mile High City might not be a ‘mile high’ forever.
A report written by Leonard O. Ohenhen, et al. that was published in Nature Cities on May 8 took a look at which major metros areas around the United States were sinking, highlighting 28 places that are sinking between 2 and 10 millimeters each year.
Denver was determined to be one of nine cities that’s got land that’s sinking by more than two millimeters each year. Denver was also among cities with the most widespread subsidence exposure – about 98% of the city area is affected by some level of sinkage in Denver, along with Chicago, Dallas, Columbus, Detroit, Fort Worth, New York, Indianapolis, Charlotte, and Houston…
