AURORA, Colo. — Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman is proposing a new requirement for the city’s police department: an annual physical fitness test for all new officers entering the force after January 1, 2026.
The mayor announced the proposal this week, stating he will bring forward a resolution that would direct the Aurora Police chief to develop fitness standards by the end of the year. If adopted, the rule would apply only to new hires, not current officers.
“Officers who are not in appropriate physical condition are more likely to be injured on the job and are more likely to have to escalate the use of force in a confrontation if they are not in shape to go “hands on” with a suspect of superior strength,” Coffman said in a written statement…
