Severe weather targets Colorado on Sunday

DENVER — The ingredients for large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes are coming together for the northeastern plains on Sunday. Watch for rotating storms known as supercells to form around 2 p.m. and move northeast towards Nebraska impacting places like Akron, Sterling, Yuma, Wray and Holyoke.

A severe thunderstorm or tornado watch is likely to be issued by the National Weather Service on Sunday morning which will further detail the threats and threat area, but it looks like baseball-size hail will be possible along with damaging winds in excess of 65 mph.

This storm will also carry high tornado potential, especially in the tri-state area of southwest Nebraska, northeast Colorado and northwest Kansas. The general wind shear over northeast Colorado could also allow for non-supercell tornadoes or landspouts to form with lower caliber thunderstorms closer to the I-25 metro cities…
