DENVER (KDVR) — An Aurora woman who was found guilty in March of using a dead person’s identity to cash checks was sentenced Monday to 48 months in prison.
Sarai Jamila Nyasha Freeman, 41, was found guilty by a federal jury of two counts of passing and uttering counterfeit obligations and securities, two counts of aggravated identity theft and one count of failure to appear for her trial, which was initially scheduled for December last year.

On Monday, she was sentenced to 2 years imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release. She was also ordered to pay $2,826 in restitution.
Freeman was indicted in July 2024 after fraudulently using a dead person’s identity to cash two counterfeit U.S. Treasury checks in 2020 in Oklahoma. Prosecutors say Freeman’s actions in Oklahoma were part of a larger operation “spanning several states from Louisiana to Colorado, with Freeman also fraudulently cashing checks in at least Missouri and Arkansas.”…
