Mosquito-borne illness kills person in Colorado with more deaths likely as summer progresses

Colorado’s first West Nile Virus-related death of 2025 has occurred, involving a Boulder County resident. Denver Gazette reports that the adult who died was from Lafayette.

It’s also worth noting that nine other cases have been confirmed across eight counties thus far this year, though these cases have not proven fatal at this time. On average, about 10 to 11 Coloradans die each year due to West Nile Virus.

With 76 human cases of West Nile Virus confirmed in Colorado last year, that number was notably low – the lowest since the chaotic year of 2020 (35 cases) and down from 634 cases in 2023 and the 323 cases that have occurred each year on average since 2003.
