An exotic animal was found on Colfax Avenue after escaping Lakewood home

DENVER (KDVR) — Colorado is no stranger to strange animal encounters with police — earlier this year, police corralled a red kangaroo that had escaped its home just months after it made headlines for another escape attempt.

However, emus seem to pop up regularly in interactions with police. Just last year, an emu was found loose in Weld County, although law enforcement mistook the large bird as an ostrich.

Dennisaurus Rex, an emu who walks on a leash in Colorado Springs, is also a well-known figure to both residents and law enforcement — and has also been known to get loose, only to be recaptured by law enforcement.

Emus are legal to own as pets in Colorado, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, alongside a range of animals, including bison, reindeer, alpaca and more. A full list of animals that are legal to own in Colorado by private citizens is available online here…
