DENVER — Denver is losing critical federal and state housing vouchers that help transition homeless individuals from shelters to permanent housing. The loss of about 180 vouchers so far threatens the city’s goal of moving 2,000 people off the streets this year and into permanent, stable housing.
The Denver Housing Authority lost 100 housing vouchers last quarter after federal funds were pulled back, while the state cut another 80 vouchers as Colorado faced a billion-dollar budget shortfall. The reduction affects nearly 200 people who would have been able to secure permanent housing this year, according to Mayor Mike Johnston.
“It’s almost 200 people who would’ve been able to get into permanent housing that won’t be able to this year because of that,” Johnston said. “We are very worried about that.”…
