‘As rare as it gets’: Tropical bird spotted near Denver marks 1st Colorado sighting in over 90 years

DENVER (KDVR) — Dozens of bird watchers recently flocked to Broomfield to catch a rare glimpse of a tropical bird that has not been seen in Colorado in almost a century.

Matt Hofeditz has been birding since he was 10 years old. He told FOX31 in an interview over text that he was shocked to see something rare when he visited a local pond on Aug. 20.

Hofeditz said he happened to be visiting Alexx and Michael’s Pond “on a whim,” when a huge white bird with black wingtips caught his eye.

“I immediately recognized it as a Wood Stork, which has not been seen in the state in over 90 years! This same bird was first seen by a gentleman named Patrick O’Driscoll flying over City Park in Denver on the 17th, but no one could relocate it. So I was shocked to find that the bird had landed at a pond very close to my house in Broomfield,” Hofeditz said…
