Broomfield man sentenced to prison for distributing psychedelics that killed 1

DENVER (KDVR) — A 52-year-old man from Broomfield was sentenced to two years in prison by a federal judge after he pleaded guilty to a single drug distribution charge, stemming from one person’s death.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado, Ameen Alai, who is also called Adam Powars, was sentenced to 48 months in prison after he pleaded guilty to one count of distribution of a mixture and substance containing a detectable amount of ibogaine.

Ibogaine is a Schedule I controlled substance in the U.S., and officials say the substance does not currently have any accepted medical use and has a “high potential for abuse.” The substance, which is psychoactive, has been studied as a possible treatment for addiction and depression.

The office said that, per a plea agreement, Alai told others that ibogaine was “a means to ‘reset’ the body’s ‘receptors’ to break addictive tendencies.” In March 2021, Alai distributed a dose or more of ibogaine to a person in Broomfield and supervised the use of the substance…
