Denver faces decision on controversial Flock surveillance cameras as contract expires at end of October

DENVER — Denver must decide by the end of October whether to continue using its controversial Flock surveillance cameras, with city officials, the police department, and privacy advocates divided over the technology that can track any vehicle throughout the city at any time.

The city’s contract with Flock runs out at the end of next month, creating urgency for the Surveillance Technology Taskforce established by the mayor to balance privacy concerns with public safety needs. However, task force members acknowledge that finding common ground may not be possible within the tight timeline.
