Community helps find missing dog lost in Colorado woods for 27 days

DENVER (KDVR) — A Denver couple was losing hope after their 2-year-old dog, Kaiya, ran off into the woods near Crested Butte — that is, until they got a call nearly a month after she went missing.

Trevor Broderick and Emily Assaf were heading home from celebrating their anniversary after camping with their dog. Broderick said they were near One Mile Campground, right outside of Almont, when Kaiya jumped out of their car, which was going about 15 mph.

This was the last time they saw her for nearly a month.

Broderick said Kaiya ran in the opposite direction and was last seen at Harmels on the Taylor River. Kaiya went missing on Sept. 21, and for nearly the next month, the couple did everything they could to find her.

The couple spent two weeks camping at the campground, where Broderick said they set up scent and bait traps and live cameras. They also hung up missing dog posters and posted on every social media they could think of, but still, no Kaiya…
