The Peabody-Whitehead Mansion has a reputation as one of Denver’s most haunted locations, and when you learn about its spine-chilling history, it’s not hard to see why.
Designed by architect Frank Edbrooke, the mansion was constructed in 1889. William Riddick Whitehead, a surgeon, was the first person to inhabit the mansion. According to Uncover Colorado, he was adequate at his job (by late-19th century standards), but many of his patients still died on the table or shortly after. Whitehead reportedly believed that the ghosts of those he couldn’t save followed him to the mansion to dwell within his home.
The mansion was turned into a bar and restaurant in the 1950s, but the ghostly presences remained. Guests and staff reported odd happenings like breaking glasses, a chandelier that supposedly lights up with power, and ghosts from a war long ago. There are also reports of a jilted wife hanging herself in the mansion, as well as another woman who killed herself on the property…
