At an overcrowded shelter in Texas, a young golden retriever named Darla was running out of time.

The shelter was well past capacity and forced to make heartbreaking decisions. With more dogs than they could possibly care for, they had begun euthanizing those considered “less adoptable.” Sadly, that list included Darla.

She wasn’t sick, aggressive, or unmanageable. She was simply shy. So shy, in fact, that when staff came to lead her to the euthanasia room, she froze in fear and couldn’t walk. Instead, workers placed her in a wheelbarrow and began pushing her down the hallway…
