Englewood officer faces assault charge after traffic stop incident

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — An Englewood Police officer faces multiple charges after being accused of putting a man in a chokehold during a traffic stop last month, 9NEWS investigates has learned.

According to an arrest affidavit obtained by 9NEWS Investigates, the incident began when the officer, Ryan Vasina, pulled over a 20-year-old driver at the corner of East Layton Avenue and South Lincoln Street late the night of Oct. 8.

Vasina stopped the man after he went through a stop sign. The man, identified in court documents as a Venezuelan national, later told investigators he primarily speaks Spanish and had trouble understanding the officer, who told him to produce his driver’s license and turn over his keys…
