Denver police distributing free vehicle trackers

DENVER (KDVR) — The Denver Police Department is distributing free vehicle trackers for drivers who sign up online, according to a press release.

DPD is partnering with the Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority to give away free Bluetooth, AirTag and SmartTag trackers to Denver residents.

Colorado coal mine to close up by end of year, will lay off 133 workers

The trackers work with the DenverTrack program that has been used since 2023.

Police aren’t able to monitor the live location of your vehicle, but if your vehicle is stolen, the tracker can be given to police, who will then be able to see the real-time location of the stolen vehicle.

Requirements, key things to know

The tracker is cost-free, but there are still several steps needed before receiving a tracker.

  • Starting at 2 p.m. on Nov. 5, those who are interested can register on the DPD Auto Theft Prevention page
    • It is important to select the time and location of the police station
  • The event itself will take place on Nov. 8, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at any of the six police stations, but trackers will only be given to people who have registered
  • Attendees will need vehicle registration and their cell phone
  • Volunteers from DPD’s Volunteers in Policing Services will help recipients set up their phones to work with the tracker
  • DenverTrack is also giving window decals that can alert would-be thieves to steer clear

DPD said that the introduction of the trackers and vehicle registration with DenverTrack has helped reduce auto thefts by 54% this year compared to the average of the last three years…
