DENVER (KDVR) — Deep reds, vibrant greens and even some yellows were visible over Colorado in Tuesday night’s sky as a geomagnetic storm hit Earth, reacting with the atmosphere.
The aurora borealis was visible across a wide swathe of Colorado on Tuesday night — FOX31 employees were even able to capture images of the phenomenon from downtown Denver.
The weather phenomenon occurs when the sun ejects a coronal mass that reaches the Earth’s magnetic field, creating a geomagnetic storm. The current coronal mass ejections are so strong that they prompted the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center to issue a G4 geomagnetic storm alert on Tuesday.
