New law requires front wheel drive cars to carry chains on I-70 when traction laws are in place

GOLDEN, Colo. (KDVR) — The Colorado Department of Transportation, Colorado State Patrol and local car and tire shops met Thursday morning to discuss traction law revisions now in place.

“It’s a change in the law, it doesn’t mean you can’t go to the mountains if you have a two-wheel drive or front wheel drive,” Andrew Hogle, a public information officer with CDOT, said. “But it means you need to basically think of yourself like a trucker does.”

The traction law is in effect from Sept. 1 to May 31. The law covers the I-70 Mountain Corridor between Dotsero and Morrison, and may also be activated on other state highways when weather or road conditions require, according to CDOT.

“It’s important for drivers to ensure that their tires are Traction Law compliant before heading up to the mountains this winter,” Hogle said in a press release. “Being prepared and following the law keeps everyone safe and helps prevent crashes and delays on Colorado’s roadways.”…
