Arrest made in connection with Lakewood burglary death

DENVER (KDVR) — Police have arrested a suspect in connection with a burglary that turned deadly in Lakewood, according to a press release from the Lakewood Police Department.

On Dec. 6, around 7:10 p.m., police were called to a home in the 300 block of South Kendall Street after a family member went to check on their mother, identified as 83-year-old Elizabeth Johnson, and found her dead in her home.

Investigators were quickly able to determine that the home had been burglarized due to broken windows, as well as the interior being “ransacked.” Other evidence suggested that a fire had been started inside the house.

On Wednesday afternoon, Lakewood police arrested a suspect, identified as 41-year-old Arthur Joseph Maestas IV, in connection with the deadly burglary. He faces charges, including:

  • First-degree murder
  • First-degree arson
  • First-degree burglary
  • Parole violation
