Aurora police credit license plate readers with rapid rescue of toddler from stolen car

AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — Aurora police say license plate reader cameras helped officers quickly locate a stolen vehicle carrying a 14-month-old child, turning what authorities described as a “nightmare scenario” into a safe rescue.

The Aurora Police Department said the vehicle was stolen in Denver after it was left idling outside a home with the child still inside. Investigators report that the suspect then drove east into Aurora.

According to Aurora police, license plate reader cameras flagged the stolen vehicle within minutes of it entering the city, alerting the department’s Real-Time Information Center and allowing officers to track the car’s movements.

“Hearing that there’s a toddler involved and inside the stolen vehicle was cause for concern, so they immediately started jumping into our technology to help them locate this car,” Deputy Chief Phillip Rathbun said…
