‘It’s hard to believe’ Neighbors see damage up close after massive Denver apartment fire

DENVER (KDVR) — Days after a massive five-alarm fire tore through an apartment complex under construction in southeast Denver, neighbors are returning to see the damage left behind.

The fire broke out Friday evening near Leetsdale Drive and South Forest Street, drawing more than 100 firefighters. One firefighter was injured but has since been released.

Wildfire evacuation orders lifted in Boulder County

Crews continued working through the weekend to extinguish hot spots as roads in the area remained partially closed on Monday.

For nine-year-old Julian Nielsen, the destruction was hard to process. She said she remembers watching the project slowly take shape years ago.

“At that time, I saw a big dirt pile, at least taller than that (the building itself),” she said. “The first thing that came to mind when I first saw it is that I want to go play in the dirt.”…
