When one thinks of prolific serial killers, names like Bundy, Dahmer, and Gacy are some of the first to come to mind. However, a serial killer who committed numerous murders in Colorado is becoming more and more notorious years after his death, as yet another cold case has been attributed to him nearly 40 years after the crime was committed.
Who Was the Colorado Serial Killer?
Vincent Darrell Groves was a Colorado man who was born in Denver on April 19, 1954. Despite having a fairly normal childhood living in a part of Wheat Ridge that was not known for crime, addiction to drugs and alcohol led Groves to spend much of his time in Denver’s red light district on Colfax Avenue, where he likely committed his first murder.

It’s widely believed that Groves’s first murder took place in the late 1970s, and he was eventually given a 12-year sentence in 1982 for another murder. However, Groves was paroled in 1987 and lived as a free man until he was once again convicted of murder in 1990 and was given a life sentence.
Groves died in 1996 after numerous health battles behind bars.
DNA Links the Colorado Serial Killer to a Near 40-Year Cold Case
It’s widely believed that Groves committed at least seven murders, though some believe that he committed over 20. But on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, it was confirmed that the serial killer was behind the tragic death of 30-year-old Rhonda Marie Fisher in 1987.
