Denver’s MLK Marade founders say they won’t march next year, call for more direct action on U.S. civil rights

DENVER — The founders of Denver’s celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Marade announced Monday they will not participate in next year’s event, saying the annual march and parade is no longer enough action given the current state of civil rights in America.

Former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb and his wife, former state Sen. Wilma Webb, who created the Marade 41 years ago, made the announcement during this year’s event as they walked down East Colfax Avenue with thousands of participants.

“Wilma and I aren’t doing this next year,” Wellington Webb said. “It is not enough to (just) celebrate King.”…
