Why did the Xcel power fail for 195,000 customers on Sunday?

DENVER — An Xcel Energy transformer failure left roughly 195,000 Xcel and CORE electric customers without power Sunday afternoon, causing widespread disruptions, including a 24-minute 911 outage in Aurora and brief power interruptions at Denver International Airport.

The specific details about the cause remain unclear.

“A disruption on the transmission system impacted multiple substations, therefore impacting feeders and customers on Xcel and CORE distribution systems,” Xcel said in a statement on Monday.
