‘Flock Off’: Denver signals plan to replace Flock with different license plate camera company

DENVER — The City of Denver is signaling it intends to replace Flock Safety as its license plate camera vendor following months of controversy over the city’s contract with the company, 9NEWS has learned.

Mayor Mike Johnston’s office has issued an informal request for proposals, asking companies to submit bids for the surveillance camera contract, the city confirmed Friday. The move marks a change in direction for Johnston, who has defended the cameras as an essential public safety tool and twice bypassed City Council approval to extend Denver’s contract with Flock.

“We are currently fielding bids for license plate reader services,” Jon Ewing, a spokesperson for the mayor’s office, said in a statement. “The chosen provider will be weighed on several factors and will be required to comply with an exhaustive list of expectations regarding data retention, information sharing, and access limitations.”…
