Man surprised to find theft of truck, trailer tied to suspect with extensive criminal record

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — A man accused of forcibly taking his young son and stealing a pickup and trailer as police searched for him has a criminal record going back years and has twice spent time in prison, 9NEWS Investigates has learned.

Jeremy Brandon Chavez, 45, faces felony charges of second-degree burglary, second-degree motor vehicle theft, attempted motor vehicle theft, vehicular eluding and criminal trespass. He’s also charged with misdemeanor counts of reckless endangerment and child abuse.

It stems from a series of incidents on Feb. 13 that began when Chavez is accused of grabbing his young son and fleeing, then trying to steal two vehicles before driving off with a pickup and trailer…
