Man sentenced for killing common-law wife

AURORA, Colo. — A man who confessed to killing his common law wife last summer pleaded guilty Monday to several charges related to her death, court records show.

The 61-year-old victim was found dead inside her apartment on July 6 of last year. According to Aurora Police, around 11:15 p.m. that night, Phil Atchue called 911 and reported that he had fatally shot his common-law wife in their apartment in the 900 block of South Ivory Circle.

On Monday, Atchue pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and second-degree assault. A charge of first-degree murder was dismissed as part of the deal. He was immediately sentenced to 48 years for the second-degree murder charge and seven years for the assault charge…
