Family says justice served after 42-year sentence in Denver killing

DENVER — A Westminster man was sentenced to 42 years in prison for killing a 23-year-old woman in June 2024.

Kelsey Roberts-Gariety was shot and killed in her apartment near East Kentucky Avenue and South Dexter Street in Denver in June 2024. Ernest Cunningham, 53, was arrested in connection with the killing. He was later convicted of second-degree murder, and was sentenced last week.

According to the arrest affidavit, Cunningham had previously threatened Roberts-Gariety’s husband after being fired by him. Cunningham was on parole from a 20-year burglary sentence at the time of the killing…
