I-25, I-70 among roads closed due to dust, multiple rolled semitrailers amid high winds

DENVER (KDVR) — High winds are causing issues on Colorado roadways on Thursday, with visibility concerns due to dust and semitrailers rolled on the road causing multiple road closures, including major roads like Interstate 70 and Interstate 25.

As of around 10:30 a.m., the following roads were closed:

  • Highway 93 is closed from Highway 72 to Highway 128
  • Interstate 25 closed due to safety concerns between exit 268 at Prospect Road and the Wyoming state line
  • U.S. Highway 85 northbound: commercial traffic is restricted from Nunn to Wyoming state line
  • Highway 128/128th Avenue is closed westbound from McCaslin Blvd. to CO 93.
  • CO 1 closed in both directions between US 287 and I-25 (Wellington) due to safety concerns

Wednesday is a Pinpoint Weather Alert Day due to high winds and high fire danger across Colorado. The highest wind gusts could reach 90 mph around the foothills and near 70 mph in areas like Conifer and Estes Park. Denver could see gusts over 20 mph.

Some reported wind gusts had already reached 80 mph by 10 a.m., and roads were quick to feel the impact.

Multiple semitrailers blown over

There have been several semitrailers blown over in the wind. Colorado State Patrol is advising drivers of high-profile vehicles to review wind advisories and travel restrictions before traveling in the state.

On Interstate 25 in Weld and Larimer Counties, the CSP said there were four different incidents of semitrailer rollovers in the wind since around 7 a.m. There were a few fluid leaks as well, but only one injury reported after a rollover on southbound I-25 at milepost 294 around 7:30 a.m. sent a driver to the hospital.
