Man found dead 800 feet below overlook identified as 40-year-old from Denver

A man who was found dead at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park on March 24 has been identified by the Montrose County Coroner’s Office as 40-year-old Paul J. Shallcross of Denver.

The cause and manner of Shallcross’ death remains under investigation at this time. Shallcross was located roughly 800 feet below the Gunnison Point Overlook found along the South Rim of the canyon. This overlook is located near the South Rim Visitor Center.

An initial report from the Montrose County Sheriff’s Office noted that it was believed Shallcross arrived at the park the night before. Once Shallcross was discovered, National Park Service rangers climbed to the scene and found no signs of life. Shallcross’ body was recovered from the scene…
