Electric modes of two-wheeled transportation have been taking off in Colorado in recent years, and as the capabilities of these devices continues to increase, so does the level of responsibility to safety that comes with using them.
According to the Lakewood Police Department, a group of eight juveniles had their electric dirt bikes impounded last week after they were allegedly spotted riding the bikes in the streets and on sidewalks, popping wheelies in traffic and traveling into oncoming lanes. The juveniles were also issued court summons as a result of the incident.
Itβs important to note that electric dirt bikes are different from e-bikes, with e-bikes utilizing pedals. Electric dirt bikes are designed to have more of a motorcycle feel. While officials werenβt specific about what dirt bike brands were being used, mid-range electric dirt bikes tend to have a top speed in the range of 40 to 50 miles per hour.
