Project Summary:
This story is part of KXAN’s “Beneath the Surface” Catalyst investigation, launched February 8, 2026. Our team’s analysis of autopsy reports and law enforcement records reveals at least 30 drowning victims – many intoxicated – over the past decade in Austin’s Lady Bird Lake. As serial killer conspiracies spread through social media, we sought answers by comparing Austin to other cities with similar features. Our data-driven, multi-platform, comprehensive investigation also examines solutions effectively preventing tragedies elsewhere – tactics local leaders are now exploring after our findings.
AUSTIN (KXAN) – After at least 30 drowning deaths in Lady Bird Lake over a decade, rumors of a serial killer prowling downtown streets and preying on young men put Austin’s crown jewel in national headlines.
At KXAN, the tragic deaths sparked a seven-month investigation to uncover the truth. To better understand how so many people died in this popular body of water, our team built a comprehensive database of lake deaths and pored over police reports, autopsies, obituaries, surveillance footage, 911 calls, body camera video and hundreds of pages of written records.
