Artist brings nature to life on Austin utility box

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A local artist, who spends most of her year inside an Austin school cafeteria as a chef, is spending her summer cooking up a more beautiful way to wait at a red light in south Austin.

What was once a plain gray utility box at the corner of Escarpment Blvd and Davis Lane has become a canvas for Austin artist Whitney White.

“I just want to bring some beauty to the school and the families that walk by. I hope that it inspires the kids to look at nature differently,” said White.

New Austin art pieces honor eastside Black educator

Whitney has coordinated this project for the last six months through the City of Austin Artbox Program.

“They had to make sure that this box was approved for me to paint. Then I had to get the community involved and get approval from the community. I talked to the PTA over at the elementary school and then the neighborhood associations on social media,” said White.
