Buda Police Department animal control officer Jordan McKibben sounded the alarm Tuesday as the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter braced for roughly 20 to 25 incoming dogs, and quickly. The shelter waived adoption fees for the day and put out an urgent call for rescue partners, transport help and foster homes, while asking anyone whose dog has recently gone missing to head straight to the facility. Volunteers and local rescues were urged to move fast as staff work to free up space.
What the Buda Police Department posted
In a Facebook post, ACO Jordan McKibben asked local rescue partners to “pull dogs,” help with transport and share adoptable animals widely, saying roughly 20 to 25 dogs were en route, according to the Buda Police Department. The post also announced that adoption fees would be waived and urged owners of missing dogs to visit the shelter in person to see if their pets had been picked up.
According to City of San Marcos Animal Services, the adoption center is open Monday, Friday and Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m., and Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 12 to 7 p.m. Details on how to apply to foster are listed on the city’s foster program webpage at City of San Marcos. The shelter also provides contact emails for people and organizations who can step in now: [email protected] and [email protected]. Prospective fosters and rescues are asked to follow the city’s instructions so they can be approved as quickly as possible.
Shelter strain is seasonal
Local reporting has noted that summer is the shelter’s busiest season and that San Marcos serves as the primary intake facility for Hays County, which can push kennels close to capacity. The San Marcos Record has documented the recurring need for adoptions, fosters and donations during the warm months to avoid space-driven outcomes. Shelter staff have been pressing the community for help in recent weeks as intake numbers climb.
Where owners should look
The city’s animal control information notes that strays picked up in Buda are taken to the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter, so owners who have lost a dog are advised to visit the shelter in person or call the shelter line at 512-805-2650. The City of Buda Animal Control also lists Jordan McKibben as the department’s animal control contact for questions about impounded pets. Rescue groups looking to coordinate pulls or transport were asked to contact the shelter’s rescue team or email [email protected]…
