Police Identify Man Shot After Stolen Fort Worth Ambulance Chase in Austin as Texas Rangers Investigate Crash and Vehicle Ramming Along I-35

AUSTIN, TX — Police have identified the man shot and killed by Texas Department of Public Safety troopers after a stolen ambulance chase that began in Fort Worth and ended in Austin. Authorities say 26-year-old Benjamin Randall Collins died at the scene on Aug. 13.

The ambulance was reported stolen from a Fort Worth Fire/EMS station before it was spotted traveling south on Interstate 35 in Williamson County. DPS said a trooper tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver kept going and led officers into Austin.

How The Chase Unfolded

According to DPS, troopers were alerted around 6:30 a.m. that a stolen ambulance was moving southbound on I-35. A trooper found the vehicle and activated emergency lights, but officials said the driver refused to pull over and began evading law enforcement.

The chase continued into the Highway 290 area in Austin, where officials said the driver intentionally rammed several vehicles. Troopers then attempted a pit maneuver, but the ambulance kept going and moved onto the I-35 upper deck. DPS said that is when a trooper fired at the driver…
