State leaders question handling of suspect before deadly Round Rock homicide

ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) – A Labor Day homicide in Round Rock is now drawing attention from state leaders who are questioning how the man accused of killing a 62-year-old man was released from jail earlier this year.

Andrew James Wimsatt was fatally stabbed at Chandler Creek Park near Double File Trail Elementary School. Investigators believe the attack was random and that Wimsatt and the suspect, 26-year-old Benedict Ogbodiegwu, did not know each other.

According to an arrest affidavit, Wimsatt was sitting on a park bench when Ogbodiegwu approached him from behind and attacked him. Ogbodiegwu was arrested later that day and charged with murder.

Williamson County court records show Ogbodiegwu was arrested twice earlier this year. One case involved a misdemeanor theft charge, while another involved failing to identify or providing false information…
