DAWA celebrates 7 years of ‘giving to the givers’

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Jonathan “Chaka” Mahone started DAWA (Diversity and Wellness in Action) in 2019 — about 10 years after he moved to Austin. He said he started the nonprofit because he started thriving in life rather than just surviving, and he wanted to give back to his community.

DAWA, according to its website, is a nonprofit organization that “honors, celebrates, and empowers the essential work of BIPOC community frontliners through direct financial support and culturally relevant health-centered programming.”

“Dawa in Swahili, it means medicine,” Mahone told KXAN on Saturday. “So we believe that when you empower people that are medicine and healing and givers in our community, everything the whole world shifts. So we’re celebrating that shift today.”…
