Whataburger has closed its first fully digital restaurant, a cashless location at 3201 Bee Caves Road in Bee Cave, Texas, that offered pickup through a Digital Pick-up Lane or exterior lockers and had no traditional seating. The closure ends a three-year experiment in a format that let customers order through the app or outdoor kiosks and retrieve their food through the lane or lockers rather than at a counter or window.
The Bee Cave store opened in September 2023 as Whataburger’s first so-called Digital Kitchen, a roughly 2,300-square-foot unit staffed by about 50 employees, according to the Houston Chronicle. Rather than a conventional drive-thru, the site introduced what the chain called its first “Digital Pick-up Lane,” a cashless setup built around outdoor ordering kiosks and temperature-controlled pickup lockers, per the same report. Customers placed orders through the Whataburger app or exterior touchscreens, then picked them up through the digital lane or from exterior lockers. As Community Impact reports, the location closed in September 2026, with a Whataburger spokesperson confirming the chain conducts regular business reviews of its stores and in some cases closes locations “to maximize opportunities for growth.”
A Spokesperson’s Explanation for the Shutdown
Per Community Impact, the spokesperson said the decision helps the company focus its efforts where it can make the biggest impact, language that mirrors how Whataburger has described other recent closures. Whataburger still operates more than 1,200 locations nationwide and continues to run restaurants in and around the Austin area, according to the outlet.
The experiment unfolded in a busy commercial corridor. Bee Cave Road carries more than 42,000 vehicles per day, according to Endeavor Real Estate Group, which describes the area as high-demand. Bee Cave had a population of 8,862 residents as of 2024, per Data USA estimates drawn from the U.S. Census Bureau.
A Format That Skipped Whataburger’s Traditional Strengths
Whataburger serves food 24/7, and most of its restaurants are open 24/7, according to the Whataburger Press Kit. The Bee Cave location had no conventional drive-thru, no curbside pickup, and no dining room; customers ordered ahead and picked up their food through the digital lane or lockers…
