For young professionals and burgeoning companies alike, Austin has become a popular destination. This has resulted in a transformed economy and a reputation as a southern tech hub.
But from tech innovators to grocery store staples, Austin has also earned a reputation over the years for being able to grow its own talent. Everyone knows Dell, Kendra Scott and Yeti are native to the ATX, but here are seven brands you might not know were started in Texas’ capital.
Schlotzsky’s
Before boots took over South Congress Avenue, there were buns. That’s because the iconic street is where the first Schlotzsky’s was opened in 1971 by Don and Dolores Dissman.
According to the restaurant’s website, the fast-casual deli-style restaurant opened its first location with just one item on the menu — an eight-inch muffuleta. Since then, the restaurant has been franchised, and it now boasts over 330 locations across the country.
Indeed
Indeed joins this list partly on a technicality as the popular job search and recruitment website was actually started in two places at once. According to the website’s bio, it was co-founded by Paul Forster and Rony Kahan in 2004, Indeed was created with offices in both Austin and Stamford, Connecticut.
