Man found guilty, sentenced for murder, 5 counts of aggravated assault

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man was convicted and sentenced in Travis County on a murder and five aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charges, according to the Travis County District Attorney’s Office.

The DA’s office said 24-year-old Cornelius Cooks was sentenced in connection with an incident that occurred in April 2021.

“The jury members assessed his punishment at 23 years for Murder and 10 years for each count of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon to be served concurrently in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice,” the DA’s office said.

Cooks was arrested on May 3, 2021, for the murder of 18-year-old Kedarius Griffin.

“Our office is grateful to our dedicated staff and law enforcement partners who worked tirelessly to hold the defendant accountable and seek justice for the victim’s family,” said Travis County District Attorney José Garza. “We hope this verdict brings closure and peace to the victim’s family.”
