Brother of San Marcos fire victim Haley Frizzell releases documentary

After four years of interviewing one survivor, victims’ families, and opening up about the death of his sister, Brian Kyle “BK” Frizzell has released his documentary “The Weight of Ashes.”

Despite the emotional toll these conversations bring, Frizzell won’t let go of the past. In fact, he has every intention to keep talking about his sister, Haley, and the four other college students who died inside the Iconic Village Apartments in San Marcos on July 20, 2018.

“It’s been a long and difficult journey with this project, and there has been no small amount of sweat and tears involved, thankfully I don’t recall any blood during this production,” Frizzell said on Facebook. “I’m so excited to make this film available and I hope that it strikes a cord in your hearts.”

In addition to Haley, the other deceased included Dru Estes, 20, David Angel Ortiz, 21, Belinda Moats, 21, and James Phillip Miranda, 23.

Frizzell began filming in June 2020, talking friends and family of the victims in gut-wrenching interviews.
